E.T. Table is an attempt to bring the soft, quiet yet friendly nature of a bedroom into a bedside table. The industrial felt that lines the drawer boxes replaces traditional drawer glides and creates a soft, smooth surface for waxed drawers to glide over. The resulting sound of a drawer gliding is akin to that of fabric rustling.
Because no drawer glides are required, the cavity for the drawer performs just as effectively as shelf and offers a soft, safe place to stow a book, computer, etc. The functionality of the unit is expanded by the ease of accommodating different options. Consumers can choose two drawers, one drawer or no drawers.
Details support the overall concept of a soft and playful piece. All edges are sanded to a soft edge for a pleasant haptic experience. Butt jointed corners give a graphic and playful feel and are biscuited for strength.
Ideation took place primarily in SketchUp and allowed for quick form and construction experimentation.
