This project was an exercise in carrying the essence of an inspirational object into a final product. Great emphasis was placed on accurate and careful color use, while form was treated more playfully.
Because color has a tendancy to fool the eye, careful analysis was used to ensure that the product truly reflected the essence of the inspirational image. Dominant colors, their proportions to one another, and their adjacencies were identified.
By sourcing a variety of images that related to the form and texture of the gypsy mushroom, it became possible to identify the most relevant qualities of the inspiration image, namely the linear gills of the mushroom and the luminous quality of pinks, which helped inform fabric choices.
The final piece features a dramatic collar whose interior mimics closely the gills of the mushroom. Like the nonuniform edge of the mushroom cap, both the collar and the waistband have asymmetrical and irregular forms, giving the piece a sense of natural whimsy. The waist band, rising in the back, falling in the front, highlights the small of the back flattering the figure, and also sports a small pocket.
