Morning Edge lids were created to address the many shortcomings that plague our mornings while drinking our morning beverages on the go. In this team project done with Michael Oukine and Jennifer Tate, we sought to create three lids, each addressing a different problem encountered during the morning commute when so many of us require the helpful jolt of a caffeinated beverage.

1,2,3 and 5 don’t close. Because these lids have a relatively low profile, coffee splashes out of the lid when walking. 4 & 6 are the worst drippers. The capillary action created by the rim of the cup causes constant dripping while sipping. Since the sipping area is flush with the top of the cup, the slightest jostle causes a significant amount of coffee to escape. None of these lids accommodate a tea bag well. Hanging the string under the lid lets the hot liquid drip out of the cup. There’s also no easy way to extract the tea bag.

Observations about existing lids led to ideation in both 2D and 3D.

Concepts for 3 lids were agreed upon, but form development fell to Ms. Johnstone-Mosher who built Solidworks models of molds to be vacuum formed. These models took into account the areas that needed the most suction in order to create sharp corners and deep cavities, utilizing a series of holes that allow suction to concentrate where necessary. The models were then 3D printed and vacuum formed in polystyrene.
